Kaitlyn's birth was a bit unexpected as we went into our 41 wk appointment ready for an ultrasound and non-stress test to send us back home for another week. My amniotic fluid level turned out to be very low (only about 3.2 when it should have been at least twice to three times that high) so we were immediately sent over to the hospital to be admitted and start some sort of induction- we opted to try  Cervadil first  since there was a good chance that it could put me into labor w/o other intervention. Unfortunately 12 hrs. worth of cramping did little to dilate or efface my cervix so at about 7 am Wed. we opted to have my water broken which started contractions that grew in strength and frequency all day, but by about 11pm I was still only about a 3-4 and 50-60% and in so much pain and so tired I had to have an epidural w/ the Pittosin. It took until about 1pm on Thurs. for my cervix to dilate completely and to be ready to push - I pushed for 4 hrs. w/o success, the OB on-call tried to assist w/ forceps and vacuum and finally we determined that a C-section was needed due to the length of time my water had been broken already, potential for infection, and not wanting the baby to go into distress...needless to say this was not the birth we had planned, but we have a healthy little girl to show for it!

We finally arrived home yesterday (Sunday) in the afternoon and actually had a decent first night at home, now it is just a matter of catching up on e-mail and figuring the rest of today out!

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes and loving thoughts!  Wish you were all here to meet our sweet little thing!

Though not the birth you had anticipated, as you said, you have a healthy daughter as a result of your efforts. She's just beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Welcome home, Kaitlyn, indeed! What a lucky little girl to have the Mommy and Daddy she has! -Grace

Jen, this is Amany, Nate's student. I just want to say that you and Kaitlyn look so beautiful. Congratulations. Although babies cry alot but somehow, they fill your life with happiness and wonderful feelings that one couldn't experience them anyway else. So, enjoy and watch for the first smile at six weeks :)

Jen, I hope you are having a good time with Karyn and Dave. At least someone gets to snuggle that cute little niece of mine! She is beautiful, and I am sure she will have no shortage of personality knowing her father :)
